MediaTek and Sunplus Technology have announced that they are in the process of getting Blu-ray chipsets certified, with potential clients to begin shipments beginning in the second quarter of next year. They hope to join the ranks of Broadcom and Sigma as major players in the Blu-ray Disc player chipset market.
Additionally, Hitachi and Sanyo will both begin production of Blu-ray pick-up heads (PUH) early next year. Currently, Sony and Sharp are the major producers, but with the market demand exceeding production capability, these new players will help add to the available supply.
